Transverse Myelitis

Transverse myelitis is an uncommon condition involving inflammation of the spinal cord occurring at one or more levels and resulting in injury to or destruction of nerve fibers running in the spinal cord from the brain to various parts of the body. The exact cause of transverse myelitis is not known, however many doctors suspect it may be an autoimmune process, where the body’s own immune system attacks the spinal cord.

Transverse myelitis usually occur as a single episode, often starting with pain in the upper back and neck, soon followed by weakness or paralysis of the extremities. These symptoms may improve or get dramatically worse and may be permanent. Uncommonly, another attack may follow the first.

Most doctors believe transverse myelitis is treatable with prompt administration intravenous steroids. When a patient presents with symptoms which could indicate transverse myelitis, it is imperative that the diagnosis be established quickly and treatment begun. The diagnosis of transverse myelitis is sometimes said to be one of exclusion, meaning that if other conditions such as an infection or a stroke involving the spinal cord are ruled out and the symptoms fit with the diagnosis of transverse myelitis, the patient is presumed to have that condition and is treated accordingly. With prompt diagnosis and treatment, patients often have no or minimal long term complications. If diagnosis and treatment are delayed, patients may be left with permanent, disabling paralysis.

In consultation with neurologists, neuroradiologists and other physicians, the lawyers at the Sweeney Law Firm will work with medical specialists to analyze medical records, imaging studies such as MRIs and other information to determine if there was inappropriate delay in diagnosis and beginning treatment for your transverse myelitis. If so, The Sweeney Law Firm may be able to recover money damages to help pay for medical and other long-term care and rehabilitation expenses , and to compensate you and your family for the emotional and physical pain and suffering, permanent disability, loss of quality of life and other damages that occur in these types of cases.
