Pre-Eclampsia, Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension (PIH), HELLP Syndrome, Toxemia of Pregnancy
Pre-eclampsia, pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), HELLP syndrome, and toxemia of pregnancy are names applied to a group of interrelated disorders of pregnancy. They are variously characterized by high blood pressure, protein appearing in the urine, swelling, especially of feet and ankles, liver damage, decreased platelets, and neurologic symptoms ranging from hyperactive reflexes up to and including maternal seizures and death. These conditions are also associated with decreased blood and oxygen delivery to the baby through the placenta, potentially causing birth asphyxia, brain damage, and cerebral palsy.
These conditions usually develop during the prenatal period, often within a few weeks of the due date, but they may also occur in the mother days after delivery of the baby. These conditions may be treated with medications; however, they may also require that the baby be promptly delivered by cesarean section. If a pregnancy is affected by any of these conditions, the baby is at increased risk for brain damage.
