Our History

Sweeney, Farnbaugh, and Douglass

Charles Sweeney formed the Sweeney Law Firm in 1984. Sweeney was one of the first attorneys in Indiana to completely devote the firm’s practice to the representation of personal injury victims. In 1995, Sweeney teamed up with David Farnbauch, a board-certified civil trial attorney, to develop a personal injury firm with the experience and financial resources to handle complex and serious bodily injury claims. Attorneys in northeast Indiana and western Ohio routinely refer personal injury, malpractice, and nursing home negligence cases to the Sweeney Law Firm or collaborate with Sweeney and Farnbauch on a co-counsel basis.

Over the years, the lawyers at the Sweeney Law Firm have become very adept at using computers and computer-generated demonstrative evidence to persuade insurance companies and juries in cases involving significant and permanent bodily injuries. In addition to their computer expertise, the firm has developed a network of experts and consultants who assist them in investigating and preparing cases for settlement and trial.

The Sweeney Law Firm has been recognized as an “AV” law firm by the Martindale-Hubbell Bar Register. For over 130 years, Martindale-Hubbell has been the most respected source of authoritative and reliable information about members of the legal community in the United States.

An “AV” rating identifies a lawyer and a firm with a very high to preeminent legal ability and is the highest reflection of expertise, experience, and integrity and overall professional excellence. Martindale-Hubbell ratings are established by attorneys for attorneys and it states: “clearly indicates a demonstration of the highest professional and ethical standards.”

In 2007, David Farnbauch was selected as an Indiana “Super Lawyer” by Law & Politics. Law & Politics performs the polling, research and selection of Super Lawyers in a process designed to identify lawyers who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. Super Lawyers is a comprehensive and diverse listing of outstanding attorneys, representing a wide range of practice areas, firm sizes and geographic locations. Only 5 percent of the lawyers in each state or region are named Super Lawyers.

Charles Sweeney received his law degree from the University of Notre Dame Law School, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Indiana Trial Lawyer Association. In 2005, Mr. Sweeney became of counsel to the firm.

David Farnbauch graduated from Valparaiso University Law School, where he was also a member of Valpo’s Law Review. In 1999, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association, and in 2002, Farnbauch achieved Board Certification as a “Civil Trial Advocate” by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Only two other lawyers in Allen County have achieved board certification in trial advocacy. In 2006, Farnbauch was elected to serve as the President of the Allen County chapter of the Inns of Court, an organization that is dedicated to promoting collegiality and civility among lawyers. David Farnbauch is a frequent speaker on various topics regarding personal injury litigation.
