Brain Infections, (Meningitis, Encephalitis)

Infection of the membranes covering the brain is called “meningitis”.  Infection involving tissues of the brain itself is called “encephalitis”.  Symptoms vary depending upon the age of the patient, the exact location of the infection and the type of virus, bacteria or fungus causing the infection. In general, symptoms consist of headache, stiff neck or pain when moving the head or neck, sensitivity to light (photophobia), fever, nausea, vomiting, drowsiness, lethargy, personality changes, and in later stages various other neurological abnormalities.

The key to diagnosis of these conditions is often a high level suspicion by the healthcare provider.  Confirmation of the diagnosis may require removal and examination of spinal fluid (a spinal tap or lumbar puncture), brain-imaging studies such as CT scans or MRIs, and other testing.  In many cases, time is critical. Generally, the sooner the infection is diagnosed and treated, the better the outcome.  The difference can be a matter of life and death. Survivors of brain infections diagnosed late may be left with severe neurologic disability.

In consultation with neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists and other physicians, combined with a detailed review of medical records, laboratory results, CT scans and MRIs, the lawyers at the Sweeney Law Firm will work with medical specialists to determine the nature of the infection, and whether or not it was diagnosed and treated appropriately and in a timely fashion.  If malpractice occurred, we may be able to obtain money for death or injury, medical expenses, rehabilitation expenses, loss of income, pain and suffering and other damages.
