Aortic Aneurysms
An aortic aneurysm is an outpouching of the wall of the aorta, the major artery carrying blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Aneurysms can be due to a variety of causes, but the primary factor is a weakening in the blood vessel wall. Sometimes an aneurysm can result when blood separates the layers of the wall of the aorta and accumulates between the layers, said to be a “dissecting” aneurysm. Aneurysms can occur in the aorta in the chest (thoracic), or in the abdomen.
Individuals with aortic aneurysms may present with sudden onset, severe pain in the chest or abdomen. The diagnostic workup includes a physical examination, x-ray and other imaging studies. Aneurysms may be stable for years, but aneurysms, which are enlarging and causing pain, may need to be repaired immediately. Treatment options include surgery and placement of a graft by means of a catheter, which is placed through a peripheral artery, such as the artery in the groin. The treatment for aortic aneurysms is usually highly successful if done in a timely manner. Delay or misdiagnosis can result in rupture and death.
